Picture this: You finally manage to make it home, after hours of work, commuting and traffic; only to find your dirty dishes still in the sink, junk mail scattered on the dining table, an unmade bed, and four days' worth of clothes piled up on the chair in your bedroom. Some odds and ends are here and there in the living room and there’s laundry lying on the bathroom floor.
Does this scenario make you feel panicked? You're not alone. It is proven by research that a ‘messy’ home is more likely to make you anxious. That’s all thanks to a fancy stress hormone. Say hello to Cortisol.
When our home is nothing like the reflection of calm, order and simplicity that we want it to be, we instinctively panic. You can almost immediately feel a rapid increase in heart rate as you frantically skim through what looks more like a war-zone; zig-zagging through unwanted stuff and dreading those daunting chores, waiting to be done. Only to wake up the next morning, hoping or praying the Fairy Godmother was kind enough to pay a visit, wave her magic wand and effortlessly restore order, tidiness and peace in your beautiful home.
It is to no surprise that such feelings contribute to chronic stress. If not addressed, such a situation might consciously or unconsciously be putting our physical and mental health at risk. As our external spaces reflect our internal state, an orderly home supports the mind to a more stable, calmer, simpler way of being. But where do you start?
First and foremost, you start by not ignoring how your home is making you feel. Sometimes it’s very easy to get used to living a disorganised life. One where not finding what you need at the right time, having clothes that you never wear that are taking up precious space in your wardrobe and buying more and more stuff that you do not need has become an ordinary habit. When things are left undone or you keep postponing a much needed purge, you might end up feeling dissatisfied with your home or with yourself.
We need to understand that everything that we hold on to, or possess, has a positive or negative connotation related to it in our subconscious mind, whether we like it or not. How our belongings make us feel plays a major role in the way we relate to our living spaces, and therefore, this has a massive ripple effect on our happiness. I like to see it as a delicate balance of energy. When excessive, unwanted, stagnant or disorganised belongings sabotage our homes, we become energy depleted. This makes you more prone to procrastinating what needs to be organised. So if you strictly own only what you really need and love, it just becomes so much more enjoyable to care for, organise and maintain your home.
What we own quickly becomes part of who we are. If we want a clutter-free home; one which helps us live fully, efficiently and happily; we need to start by scrutinising our possessions. We should own or keep only what truly deserves to be in our lives and is truly worthy of our time and space. Do you own your belongings or do they own you?
Make time to think thoroughly about this if you really want to get organised. If you are consistent enough, this might become the start of a whole new way of thinking for you. It might also be seen as a method to revolutionise your decision-making patterns. When you declutter your home you economise on your energy, save on space and make more time to enjoy what you really love doing. Home organising is a practice that nurtures an attitude of gratefulness within for all that we are and all that we own.
It is an internal change that will not only make you more organised, but even happier. Organising your home is not an easy venture, especially if you are not naturally inclined to like organising, but I promise that it is worth all the time and effort you decide to invest in it. I would love to share with you one of my favourite quotes by Benjamin Franklin: “For every minute spent in organising, an hour is earned.”
